restaurant for December 4 at 11:00 a.m. The restaurant’s contacts
are Harris or Tara for the buffet menu. The committee members are
Cynthia, Margaret, Clem, Bob, Ernie, Laura and Sets who will select a menu
in October and find out the cost for the dinner buffet. A separate
room has been reserved which can accommodate 40 people.
2. 2011 Officer Nominations: Chita reported that she has
been unsuccessful in getting nominations for the 2011 officer nominations.
3. September 18th Orchid Safari: Chita said that 5 members
have signed up for the safari so far and introduced Gary Moniz, a Species
Club member and Kunia Orchid Club’s President. Gary told members
who were planning to go to the safari on Saturday, September 18, to meet
at Kaimuki’s McDonalds at 8:00 a.m. Directions to McD’s were:
on H-1, heading towards Koko Head, take the 6th Avenue exit and turn left
at 6th Avenue. St Patrick’s will be on the right and McD’s
will be on the left. The safari will then leave McD’s at 8:30 a.m.

has a little “orchid plants” sign on the road. Gary encouraged members
to carpool and reminded them about the signup for the lunch potluck.

MAHALO to Gary Moniz and the Species Club for inviting our club to the
September 18th orchid safari to Kawamoto Nursery and H&R Nursery!
Hopefully, the members who went on the safari got a good collection of
the orchid plants that they wanted. Just to visit the local nurseries
is an awesome trip where you get to see all the different orchids that
they are growing!
A BIG THANK YOU goes to Ann Geschwandtner for being our speaker at our
September meeting. Ann brought in three tables full of her orchids
and plants from her nursery in Kaawa and showed us that “Variety is a Garden
of Life”. There were blooming orchid plants, bromeliads, cacti, ti
leaf, tropical flowers, anthuriums, and more. She talked about each
plant and what media was used and how she experimented with the media to
see which mix made the plant grow best. Ann reminded us that her
nursery is located in a wetter climate so her style of growing her plants
may not be the same for Mililani but she encouraged members to experiment
doing different things to make your plants grow better.
